Building the Infrastructure of Democracy

Since 2001, we have dedicated ourselves to creating government buildings that serve as both functional workspaces and symbols of civic values.

Team of architects reviewing building plans

Our Origin

Spark-fern was founded by three architects who shared a conviction: that government buildings should inspire trust, not intimidation. They had each worked on public sector projects for larger firms and repeatedly encountered the same problem.

Budget constraints and bureaucratic inertia often resulted in designs that prioritized cost over quality, efficiency over elegance. Communities deserved better.

From a small office in Melbourne, they began taking on local government commissions. Word spread. Within five years, their portfolio included state-level projects. Within ten, they were collaborating with federal departments.

What Guides Our Work

Transparency in Process

We maintain open communication with all stakeholders throughout the design and construction phases. No surprises, no hidden costs, no unexplained decisions.

Respect for Context

Every site has a history. Every community has unique needs. We listen before we design, and we adapt our approach to each specific context rather than imposing formulaic solutions.

Durability Over Fashion

Architectural trends come and go. Government buildings must endure for generations. We prioritize timeless design principles and robust materials that age gracefully.

Environmental Responsibility

Public institutions have a duty to model sustainable practices. Our designs incorporate passive climate control, renewable energy systems, and materials with low embodied carbon.

Specialized Knowledge

Government architecture operates within a complex regulatory framework. Building codes, accessibility standards, security protocols, heritage protections, and procurement regulations all shape what is possible.

Our team includes members with backgrounds in public administration, structural engineering, and urban planning. This interdisciplinary expertise allows us to navigate bureaucratic requirements without compromising design integrity.

We have established relationships with regulatory bodies across Australia, which streamlines approval processes and reduces project timelines.
